Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Motorola MOTOTRBO Ion need to be programmed?
Yes, the Ion must be programmed with your licensed frequencies before use. You'll be asked at checkout whether you'd like programming, or you can add it in advance via our Atlantic Radio Programming Services page. To program it yourself, you'll need the Motorola CPS 2.0 software (HKVN4362A) and either the PMKN4230 or PMKN4265A programming cable, both sold separately.
What is the difference between the standard and intrinsically safe (UL) versions?
The standard Ion is designed for general professional use across a wide range of industries. The intrinsically safe (UL-rated) version is certified for use in hazardous locations where flammable gases, vapors, or dust may be present — such as oil and gas facilities, chemical plants, and mining operations. The IS version uses the PMNN4804 battery instead of the PMNN4803.
What is the difference between UHF and 800/900 MHz models?
The UHF model (400–527 MHz) is the most versatile option and is compatible with the widest range of existing MOTOTRBO infrastructure. The 800/900 MHz model is designed for organizations already operating on 800 or 900 MHz public safety or commercial networks.
Can the Ion be used as a standalone LTE device without a radio network?
Yes. The Ion supports broadband LTE connectivity independently of its two-way radio functionality, allowing users to access apps, data, and push-to-talk over cellular (PoC) services like Motorola WAVE PTX when outside radio coverage.
Does the Ion support trunked systems?
Yes, the Ion supports MOTOTRBO trunking architectures including Capacity Plus, Linked Capacity Plus, and Capacity Max.
What Android apps can be used on the Ion?
The Ion runs Android and supports business-critical applications including workforce management, video surveillance, GPS tracking, and more. Apps can be deployed and managed via Android Enterprise for secure, centralized device management.
Warranty
